Last weekend, my family and I paid a visit to a long time friend living in the suburbs of Boston. I have not seen this friend for 2 years now. When we walked into his house, I was surprised to find my friend in a wheelchair being pushed by his son. I took one look at my friend and felt his health had deteriorated quite a bit. To keep my composure, I casually asked, “Assalamu-alaikum, how are you feeling?” He replied, “Wa-alaikum salam, I’m on dialysis now.”
I was quite shocked to hear that. I was even more shocked to learn that he is doing dialysis on a daily basis. Later we were informed the reason why he is on dialysis. It seems he had a surgery done on his back. To ease the pain after surgery, the doctors prescribed him some painkillers. Unfortunately, those painkillers had a terrible side effect. They caused both his kidneys to stop working, leaving him with no other choice than to do dialysis daily to cleanse his blood. The lesson: Be very careful when taking medical drugs, especially painkillers as they can have terrible side effects.
