A woman came to me recently complaining of cold feet and toes. She also had cramps in her legs and buttocks. When I was checking her feet, I also found varicose veins on her calves and behind the knee. I told her that her blood flow has become weak. Varicose veins are “leaky pipes” in our legs that allow blood to pool and become stagnant.
Poor blood circulation can also cause numbness in the hands and feet, fatigue, hair loss, vertigo or dizziness, headaches, dandruff, itchy skin, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, fatigue and lack of stamina.
Causes of Poor Circulation
1. Narrowing of Blood Vessels
Poor circulation can be caused by the narrowing of blood vessels and arteries. Arteries can also stiffen due to plaque buildup in the arteries and blood vessels. Both conditions decrease blood flow to your extremities and can result in pain.
Reduced blood flow to your hands and legs can cause numbness, tingling, nerve damage and even tissue damage. If left untreated, reduced blood flow and plaque to your arteries can result in a stroke. If plaque buildup takes place in the arteries in your heart, you’re at risk of having a heart attack.
2. Blood Clots
Blood clots are semisolid clumps of blood. They are beneficial when they form in response to an injury or a cut, plugging the injured blood vessel, which stops bleeding. After the bleeding stops and healing takes place, your body usually breaks down and removes the clot. But if the breakdown of blood clots does not happen, they can block the flow of blood, either partially or entirely.
A common sign of blood clot is swelling in one leg or arm. Blood clots can block the healthy flow of blood in the legs, and blood can pool behind causing the swelling. Another sign of blood clot is chest pain. Unlike a heart attack, the chest pain with blood clots tends to be sharp and stabbing, and feels worst when you take a deep breath. The pain also gets worse with every breath you take.
3. Varicose Veins
The legs are the most common area where the bulging varicose veins appear. From the legs, the blood has to travel upwards towards the heart. In order to do that, there has to be healthy blood circulation. When the blood circulation is poor, the valves in the leg whose purpose is to prevent the backwards flow of blood, is not able to perform properly.
This makes the blood to stagnant and not flow normally which cause the bulging of the veins. There can be a sensation of heaviness or achiness that may be worse following exercise or at night.
