Last week, I had a client with severe tightness and pain in his upper shoulders and neck. After I performed a HijamaHerbs session on him, he was feeling much more relaxed and he walked away feeling much better.
Most of the time, the upper shoulders and neck tense up when you become stressed out or anxious. In response to the stressful stimuli, you crunch up your shoulders and cramp your neck muscles. When you do this many times, and it becomes a habitual pattern, your shoulder and neck muscles becomes tight and sore to touch. A HijamaHerbs session can help relieve this condition.
Pain is typically caused by an automatic reaction in the musculoskeletal and nervous systems after the body experiences trauma. However, stress-related pains in the neck are usually the result of emotionally-driven anxiety which effects the primary muscles and nerves running through the spine, shoulders, and neck.
Stress can exert a tremendous physical effect on your body. When you suffer from anxiety, you’re putting your body through extensive, long term stress. Your body is pushed into the “fight or flight” mode. That means it’s releasing hormones that tense muscles and causes you to feel uptight and more anxious.
The main cause of neck pain is tension. During periods of intense anxiety, your muscles tense up dramatically. Muscle tension tightens the muscles, especially in the shoulders, back, and neck. The more anxiety you experience, the more your tension may cause significant pain and discomfort.
Neck pain is one of the symptoms that is caused by persistent anxiety. It doesn’t occur with everyone, but many people do experience a degree of neck pain that ranges from slightly irritating to severe.
Many people get muscle tension in their neck during times of stress. But if you are one those with anxiety, you are more prone to noticing it and focusing on it. People with anxiety have a natural tendency to fixate on negative sensations and this makes the neck pain to feel more severe than it would to someone without anxiety, even though objectively the pain would be equal.
The people with anxiety may be more prone to experiencing greater degrees of neck discomfort than those without anxiety. Mild to moderate neck pain occurs often even when no anxiety or health problems are present as a result of sitting in chairs all day, sleeping in uncomfortable positions, looking down too often or not stretching.
The people without anxiety may pass this off as a normal ache and pain – one that they experience often in life. Those with anxiety, especially those with panic attacks that are unusually sensitive to physical sensations, may be unable to think about anything else. The degree of mental energy they place on their neck pain may increase the pain experience, and possibly further anxiety.
When anxiety causes neck pain through muscle tension, the best thing to do is control the muscle tension first and the anxiety second. A HijamaHerbs session is one of the most effective treatments for shoulder and neck pain.
